“Changing hearts and minds in today’s diverse global society”

Learn about the Middle East and Islamic culture through the legacy of Emir Abdelkader (1808-1883). He supported what was fair and just, regardless of culture, creed, or civilization.

Write an essay or podcast interview script addressing how Abdelkader’s values can be applied today. Find contest details at www.abdelkaderproject.org/student-contest-2020/.

INSPIRING CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY – EDUCATIONAL TOOLS
AEP’s educational initiatives feature 19th century history with lessons for today drawing on the legacy of Emir Abdelkader, a global icon of religious and ethical leadership. Discover stories to pique student curiosity and elevate their enthusiasm for important history. Pope Pius IX and Queen Victoria sang the Emir’s praises, world leaders bestowed on Abdelkader “medals of honor,” and a town in America’s heartland was named after him. Here is a figure who represents for Muslims, true jihad—the struggle to live up to one’s highest values—and for everyone, true humanitarianism—defending people, regardless of their race or religion. GUEST ARTICLE:  “When Emir Abdelkader died in 1883, the New York Times eulogized him as one of the greatest men of the 19th Century. He did struggle against many foes, but he recognized that his greatest enemies were fear, anger, and prejudice. When the French armies invaded Algeria, he frustrated their colonial pretensions for years. When he captured French soldiers, he treated them respectfully and magnanimously; when the French finally overcame him, they treated him treacherously and shamefully.

After several years’ imprisonment in France, he was exiled to Damascus. There, in 1860, he saved an estimated 7,000 Christians from massacre by the Turks, personally going with his bodyguards into besieged areas of the city and bringing the refugees to safety within the walls of his large compound. He was also a Koranic scholar, a mathematician, and a mystic who taught that all people, regardless of their religious affiliations, were all one in the love of their Creator.” ~ William Witt, Elkader (Iowa) Native and World Citizen
