The 2022 Abdelkader-PRSSA Iowa Prize

Six – $500 prizes for an individual or team of students from each PRSSA in Iowa.

This prize seeks to:

  • Challenge popular preconceptions about Muslims.
  • Encourage journalistic and public relations work in Iowa, based upon the life and times of Emir Abdelkader.

Overview

The Abdelkader Education Project (AEP), an international initiative with a home-base in Elkader, Iowa, hosts a monetary prize for students who are members of a PRSSA club, in Iowa.

Enter to win one of six – $500 prizes for an individual or team of students from each PRSSA in Iowa.

Entry Guidelines

Students must be members of one of the 6 PRSSAs, in Iowa

Public Relations

Submit a design for a PR campaign, with an Iowa constituency in mind. Judges will consider all manner of creative designs —  billboards, ads, graphics, PSA’s  etc.  Accompany your design with an execution plan, if possible. However, do not execute on the plan prior to AEP’s agreement.

Journalism

News  or opinion pieces may be  in print, audio, or video.  Entries may be published or unpublished. Judges will weight published materials from church newsletters to  podcasts to local dailies, or professional journalism outlets.

  • The President of the United States gave Abdelkader a gift of two colt pistols
  • AEP middle school and high school curricula

  • Abdelkader saved 10,000 Christians in Damascus in 1860
  • Abdelkader credited with being a precursor to the Geneva Convention on Human Rights. His bust is displayed at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva, today, along with Henri Dunant, its founder.

From Jerusalem to Elkader:

Middle school curriculum: An exploration of three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) with an emphasis on Islam and a spotlight on the Algerian hero Abd el-Kader.

AP World History:

High school curriculum: This series of three lessons supports several learning objectives of the AP World History: Modern Unit 6. They utilize the life of Emir Abdelkader as a case study and highlight contemporary relationships between religious and cultural groups.

Harvard Pluralism Project Interactive Case-Studies:

Three short case studies on ethical leadership; dilemmas of an Egyptian-Iowan Imam; and a story of a local hate crime. All three cases are introduced by a lively historical narrative of Muslims in Iowa, entitled “Portrait of Cedar Rapids and America’s Mother Mosque.”
